As I have switched to macOS, I needed to create my own layout for Khmer script again. Thanks to the Ukulele app, it’s even simpler than on Microsoft’s Keyboard Layout Creator. Below is the layout in different modes:
As far as the usage is concerned, the Khmer OS font is available in any word editing application, provided Khmer keyboard is properly configured. Once this font is selected, clicking on the system. If your Mac runs OS X 10.6.8 or earlier and you want to install Khmer Unicode and add the Khmer keyboard layout to your system, then Khmer Unicode MacOSX Lite is the app for you. I'm trying to create web content and other documents in the Khmer language of Cambodia. Can anyone tell me where to get a keyboard layout for Mac OS? How can I set the language to Khmer if I don't see it in the list? Finally, will TextEdit or Pages allow me to type in Khmer.
In order are the following modes:
base (no modifier key)
Shift
Option
Caps lock
Shift + option
Caps lock + shift
I cannot make it to be identical to the Windows version as some vowels are made of multiples vowels and macOS apparently does not allow one key to give multiple characters. I also try to keep it as similar to the default layout on macOS and thus the symbols don’t quite match. Although just like before, you still get the American Dvorak layout just by turning on the caps lock.
Download and extract the layout file here. You will get an icon that that looks like a Lego block and shows its type as “bundle” in the list view.
Installation is very simple:
For single user: drag this bundle file to ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts/ . To reach this path, in the finder, click Go > Go to folder from the menu bar and paste in the path, or just press Command+Shift+G. Restart is not required.
For system-wide: drag this bundle file to /Library/Keyboard Layouts/ . Restart is required before you can see it in System Preferences.
Once done, go to System Preferences > Keyboard > Input source, click the + button. Select Khmer from the list of languages on the left side, then choose Khmer Dvorak on the right side and click Add. You can now select it as an input source from the language bar!
